Stairscase Stringer Styles
Routed Stringer
A routed stringer is used to attach a staircase to a framed wall. The ends of the treads nest inside the routing. Our paint grade routed stringers are constructed from 3/4" poplar material.
Open Stringer
An open stringer is used when a staircase opens or is accessible to the room into which the stair descends. This stringer style requires that the treads be fitted with returns and the risers are mitred and joined on a 45 degree angle to the stringer. The treads with returns wrap around the mitred edges of the open stringer. our paint grade open stringers are made with 3/4" poplar.
Closed Stringer
A closed stringer style staircase provides a modern or more contemporary finished look. This type of stringer is similar in concept but not application to the routed stringer. A closed stringer is typically 3" thick. This thickness provides a suitable surface area for attaching the balustrade without disturbing the face of the treads. The closed stringer stair adds visual weight and impact to the overall look of the staircase.
