Stairscase Starting Steps
Squared Starting Step
This first step is an just a continuation of the rest of the stair. The step can be the same width as the rest of the stair or it is possible to increase the width of the step to accommodate a box newel. |
Single Swell Starting Step
A single swell step is a nice design element on any partial or full open staircase. One side (left or right) of the first tread is made with a circular or radius bull nosed portion to accommodate a newel and a volute. |

Double Swell Starting Step
A double swell step is similar in design to the single swell step in that it contains two circular or radius bull nosed sections. This design element would be used in instances where the stair is double partial or double full open. |
Bowed Swell Starting Step
A bowed swell step is typically seen in flared or circular serpentine staircase styles. A system of graduated radii is applied to the stair to give a graceful transition from straight to bowed treads. |
